Hey all —
I watched Feels Good Man the other day, and I would recommend it to everybody interested in internet culture and its roots. We know Pepe in crypto in the context of “rare pepes,” but that’s just a tiny glimpse of the most famous internet frog. Sundance winner documentary tells the story of the cartoonist Matt Furie and how his creation Pepe became the symbol of hatred, racism, bigotry, and alt-right.
Memes are elements of culture passed from one person to another and have such powers that nobody could’ve foreseen when Pepe became one of the first memes ever. Not trying to control the narrative, Matt watches Pepe become a meme and a symbol for 4chan. Pepe is later discovered by the wider internet and gets a good rep, but that only infuriates the 4channers to make Pepe as grotesque as possible. The film talks about the current issues and gives a good understanding of a dangerous group: neets (not in education, employment, or training) - 14 to 30-year-old men who are unable to form social connections and meaning in their lives, and who feel immense hatred towards women, ‘normies,’ and honestly, towards each other. Prof G always talks about this group and how disconnected boys who are unable to make connections are usually the group that becomes dangerous to the public (e.g. school shootings)

Less than a month after Apple approved tokens to be bought and sold on App Store, they published an update that doesn’t allow any NFT-related functions in the app. Users can view, sell, mint, list, or transfer NFTs, but cannot use any functions like license keys, AR markers, QR codes, or crypto wallets. Jason writes in this thread, “It’s clear Apple doesn’t want NFT sales that happen outside of its store to unlock benefits on iOS because it wants its 30% commission from the sale of in-app features.”

Premise of the Metaverse. #️⃣
The one and only Neal Stephenson, who coined the term metaverse in his novel Snow Crash, have been building a metaverse company. I heard him talk about this (and actually met up with some folks at the new initiative) at Consensus 2022. Lamina1 is a tool to help developers build virtual worlds and connect them with other virtual worlds. So mainly, they are providing the infrastructure for interoperability, and they’re making it easier for others to build their own version. Company’s CEO put it this way, “it takes too much effort for independent developers to build up these persistent digital worlds and monetize them. Lamina1 wants to provide all the necessary underlying technologies to indie developers.”
